1000 before 30 #26: The Man in the High Castle – Philip K Dick

What would have happened if the Nazis had won World War II?

themaninthehighcastle'bookThe Nazis have set up a spaceport on the Moon, while the Japanese and the Germans have divided the world to suit their agendas. In the meantime, a burgeoning paraphernalia trade is booming in the US, as Japanese people seek out the kitsch-est things from US heritage.

It’s not all dark as we follow the story of Frank Fink, who worked in a factory that produced replicas of popular ‘traditional’ artifacts and decides to set up shop on his own.

His estranged wife Julia on the other side of the country shacks up with an Italian man who is not who he first appears to be. As a book about an alternate world where the Nazis did not win the war becomes more popular, will its ban be enough to restore control?

Philip K Dick continues to surpass my expectations within the science fiction genre with a book that must have inspired many alternate universe ideas.

Favourite quote: “Has brought the dead to life, corpse turned to fiery display: the past has yielded to the future.”
